Air Jordan 1: history, colourways, High or Mid, sizing and price in 2026
The Air Jordan 1 is the pair that started it all for Jordan in 1985. Here's its story, the colourways worth knowing, the difference between High and Mid, how to pick your size and what it costs in 2026.
The story of the Air Jordan 1
Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984, just as he was entering the NBA. His first signature shoe, the Air Jordan 1, was designed by Peter Moore and came out in 1985. Moore also drew the “Wings” logo, the basketball with wings you see on the ankle.
A lot of its legend comes from a rules story. Nike ran an ad saying the NBA had banned the black and red pair. In reality, according to several sneaker historians, the NBA's letter was more likely about another black and red Nike that Jordan wore early in the season, the Air Ship. Either way, the idea of a “banned” shoe sold the Jordan 1 in huge numbers.
Nike brought it back as early as 1994, then very regularly from the 2000s. Collaborations sent it through the roof, like Virgil Abloh's Off-White version in 2017 or Travis Scott's in 2019, with its backwards Swoosh. Today it's the Jordan with the most versions and one of the most searched sneakers out there.
The colourways and versions that matter
| Colourway or version | What to know |
| Chicago | White, red and black, the Bulls colours. Original 1985 colourway. |
| Bred (also called Banned) | Black and red, the pair behind the “ban” story. 1985. |
| Royal | Black and royal blue. Also out in 1985. |
| Black Toe | White and red with a black toe and heel. 1985. |
| High OG, Mid and Low | The High OG follows the 1985 shape, with “Nike Air” on the tongue. The Mid sits a bit lower and has the Jumpman logo. The Low stops below the ankle. |
Which size to get
Nike lists sizes in US, with the EU equivalent. The Air Jordan 1 fits mostly true to size and is a bit roomier than an Air Jordan 4. The leather is often stiff at first and breaks in after a few days.
- Regular feet: your usual size.
- Wide feet: half a size up can be more comfortable.
- Narrow feet: your usual size, lace the top a bit tighter.
- Think in US: a US 9 usually matches an EU 42.5 at Nike. Check with the seller's chart.
- On Yupoo, compare the length in centimetres in the album's size chart with your foot, every seller has their own.
Air Jordan 1 price in 2026

How to wear it
The High looks good with straight jeans that are a little short or cuffed, so the upper shows. You can leave the top two eyelets free and the collar a bit open, that's how a lot of people wear it.
The Low and Mid are easier with shorts or wide trousers. To look after it, a damp cloth and mild soap on the leather, and shoe trees or paper inside to limit creasing at the front.
Does the Air Jordan 1 run big or small?
It mostly runs true to size. Take your usual size, and half a size up if you have wide feet. The leather breaks in after a few days.
