A Bathing Ape, better known as BAPE, was born in 1993 in Tokyo's Ura-Harajuku neighbourhood. Its founder, Nigo (real name Tomoaki Nagao), put out his pieces in tiny quantities. That scarcity is what built the brand: little stock, long queues, and an in-house camo you recognise straight away.
The Bapesta showed up in the early 2000s. It's a low-top leather sneaker, often in patent leather, with a shooting star on the side. Its shape looks a lot like the Nike Air Force 1, and that ended up in court: Nike sued BAPE in the US in 2023, then the two brands settled in 2024, with some models dropped or changed.
The shark hoodie came out in 2004. The zip runs all the way up the hood, which forms a shark mouth inspired by the art painted on the noses of fighter jets, with the letters "WGM" for "World Gone Mad". When BAPE moved into the US in the mid-2000s, it became the brand's most recognisable piece. In 2011, the Hong Kong group I.T bought BAPE, and Nigo left the brand in 2013. Since 2021 he has been artistic director of Kenzo.
