Where Chrome Hearts comes from

Chrome Hearts started in 1988 in a Los Angeles garage. Richard Stark teamed up with John Bowman, a leather goods maker, and Leonard Kamhout, a silversmith. At first the brand mostly made leather motorcycle gear, with silver hardware on it.

Rock musicians picked it up fast: Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols wore it on stage, then bands like Mötley Crüe and Guns N' Roses. In 1992 the CFDA, the council of American fashion designers, named it Accessory Designer of the Year. Bowman and Kamhout left in 1994. Since then, Richard Stark and his wife Laurie Lynn Stark have run the brand.

Why did it become a cult brand? Because it stays hard to get. Chrome Hearts sells mainly through its own stores (Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, London, Paris…) and a few department stores. Add big collaborations, with the Rolling Stones in 2002, Comme des Garçons in 2007, Virgil Abloh, Bella Hadid in 2017 or Drake, and you get a brand rappers and fashion fans fight over.
