Is Yupoo legit? Is it legal? Straight answers
“Is Yupoo legit”, “is Yupoo safe”, “is Yupoo legal”: these are some of the first things people type after finding the site. Short answer: Yupoo is just a photo host, it is neither a scam nor a seller. What matters is who you buy from, what you buy, and how you pay. Here is the full picture, no sugarcoating.
Yupoo is just a photo host
Yupoo is a Chinese photo hosting site. Sellers create an account and sort their products into albums, like a catalogue. But Yupoo sells nothing, collects no payment and ships nothing.
So “is Yupoo legit?” does not really make sense as asked. The site itself never takes your money. Reliability depends entirely on the seller behind the album and on the middleman you use to buy (if you are new to all this, start with /blog/yupoo-cest-quoi).
What you find in the stores
Let's be honest: Yupoo stores are all over the place. You will find unbranded clothing and accessories, factory goods sold under the seller's own name, logo-free pieces “inspired by” known designs, and also copies of branded items.
Yupoo does not filter any of it. It is up to you to look at what is in front of you and know what you are buying.
What the law says in France and the EU
Buying an unbranded item from a Chinese seller is perfectly legal. You pay VAT and customs duty, like for any parcel coming from China.
Copies of branded goods are a different story. In France, importing or holding counterfeit goods is a customs offence under the Code des douanes (article 414). That applies to private individuals ordering for themselves too. In practice, customs can seize the goods and apply a fine, on top of you losing what you paid. Other EU countries have their own rules, and counterfeits are banned across the EU.
Customs regularly check small parcels from China, and counterfeits are part of what they look for. The fact that an item is sold openly online does not change its status.
We do not encourage buying counterfeit goods, and Yupa does not promote them. If you have doubts about an item, do not order it.
The real risks, even for a legal item
Even when everything is above board, buying from a Yupoo store is nothing like ordering from a European website. Here are the problems we see most, and the fix for each.
| Risk | What happens | How to limit it |
| Payment scam | You pay by bank transfer or as a friend, and the seller vanishes | Pay through a shopping agent, never directly to a stranger |
| Wrong size | Chinese sizes often run small | Compare the chart in centimetres with a garment you own |
| Disappointing quality | What arrives does not match the album photos | Ask for QC photos before shipping |
| Parcel held or seized | Customs keep the parcel or destroy it | Only order legal goods and declare the real value |
| Surprise costs | Taxes, agent fees and shipping push the total up | Work out the full cost before you confirm |
How to keep the risk low
These are simple habits, but they prevent most bad surprises.
- Use a well known shopping agent with recent reviews and a clear return policy. The agent buys for you on Weidian, Taobao or 1688, and you pay the agent, not the seller.
- Never send a direct bank transfer to a seller you do not know, and avoid “friends and family” payments that leave you with no protection.
- Insist on the QC (quality control) photos the agent takes on arrival: stitching, labels, flat measurements. It is your last chance to say no.
- Start with a small first order, one or two items, to test the seller and the agent before you combine a bigger haul.
- Check sizing with /guides/tailles-chinoises instead of going with your usual size.
- Keep screenshots of the album, the price and your messages with the seller.
- Pick your timing: the /quand-commander calendar shows when parcels tend to crawl.
What customs costs in 2026
For a parcel with a declared value under €150, the EU has applied a customs duty of €3 per item category since 1 July 2026. From 1 November 2026, a €2 handling fee is added. The VAT of the destination country is always due on top (20% in France).
The €150 threshold is expected to go away around 2028. Details and examples are in /guides/douane-colis-chine.
Where Yupa stands
Yupa is a search engine. We go through the public catalogues of about 218 Yupoo stores and show, for each item, the seller's price converted to euros and a link to their album. We sell nothing, take no commission, and never step in between you and the seller.
That also means we do not vouch for sellers. We give you what you need to compare and check (prices, size advice, a customs calendar, the Weidian, Taobao or 1688 link to paste into your agent), and the decision is yours. If you want to search all those stores at once with prices already in euros, there is a free three day trial.
Is Yupoo a scam?
No, Yupoo is a photo host and never takes your money. Scams come from some sellers, especially when paid by direct bank transfer. Going through a shopping agent cuts that risk a lot.
Is it legal to buy from Yupoo?
Buying an unbranded item through a Yupoo store is legal, you just pay VAT and duty. Importing counterfeit goods, however, is an offence in France (Code des douanes, article 414): the goods can be seized and a fine applied.
Is Yupoo safe to order from?
Yupoo does not handle orders, so it all comes down to the seller and your agent. Ask for QC photos, start small, and never pay an unknown seller directly.
Can my parcel get stuck at customs?
Yes. A parcel can be held for an inspection, a wrongly declared value or a banned item such as counterfeits. Legal parcels go through with VAT and duty, see /guides/douane-colis-chine.
Does Yupa sell the items it shows?
No. Yupa gathers public listings from Yupoo stores, shows the seller's price in euros and always links to their album. We sell nothing and take no commission.
