Where the Air Force 1 comes from
The Air Force 1 came out in late 1982. Bruce Kilgore designed it, taking cues from a Nike hiking boot called the Approach. It was the first basketball shoe with Nike Air: a pocket of air hidden in the sole to soften landings.
At first it was a high-top worn by NBA players of the time, like Moses Malone. In 1985, three Baltimore stores brought it back in royal blue and chocolate brown. It worked so well that Nike went on to drop new colourways in small quantities at a few chosen stores.
It has never left the shelves since. The all-white low became a street style staple, and Nike now calls it its best-selling shoe of all time.

The Air Force 1 runs big because the toe box is fairly roomy. Nike itself suggests going half a size down from your usual Nike size.
- Regular or narrow feet: go half a size down. If you're a US 10, aim for a 9.5.
- Wide feet: stick with your usual size.
- Between two sizes: measure your foot in centimetres in the evening and compare with the seller's size chart.
