The story of the Off-White hoodie
Off-White was born in 2013 in Milan. Its founder, Virgil Abloh, was an American designer trained in architecture, who had launched a first printed clothing project, Pyrex Vision, in 2012. With Off-White, he mixed streetwear and luxury and set very strong graphic codes: diagonal stripes, quotation marks, and the logo with arrows pointing in four directions.
The hoodie is the piece that made those arrows famous. Printed large on the back, they're visible from far away, and that's exactly what drove the brand's success on the street and on social media in the late 2010s. In 2018, Abloh also became men's artistic director at Louis Vuitton.
Virgil Abloh died in November 2021. Off-White carried on, with Ibrahim Kamara arriving in 2022 as art and image director. The arrows are still there, reworked every season: painted, taped, as a half arrow, or in collaborations, like the one with AC Milan football club.
